Please note:
Given the condition of parts of the Appian Way, we strongly recommend renting mountain bikes (MTB) or electric mountain bikes (EMTB).
On Mondays all sites are closed except for the catacombs. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying a scenic ride through one of Europe’s most stunning archaeological parks.
On Wednesdays the Catacombs of San Callisto are closed, as is the private road leading up to them. This means you’ll have to cycle for 1.5 km on the modern trafficked Via Appia before reaching the traffic-limited area of the Appian Way (from the Tomb of Metella onwards). On every other day, the private road is open from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm.
We strongly suggest reserving your bike in advance (at least the day before), especially between March and October. Helmets, locks and maps of the Regional Park of the Via Appia are included. If you haven’t received your confirmation email, please check your spam folder. Please contact us if it still has not arrived.
Bike Rental FAQs
How can I rent a bike on the Appian Way?
We recommend making an online reservation (with immediate payment) at least one day in advance – especially at weekends, on public holidays, and during peak season (from March to October).
If you would rather rent your bike on the day, simply visit us at Via Appia Antica 58-60 (open daily) with a valid ID and credit card and you can pay upon your return, depending on the time Bikes can be rented onsite depending on current availability. We do not accept online reservations on the day.
How much do bike rentals cost?
Our rental rates are as follows:
- City-bike (children and adults): €4/hour, up to a maximum of €16 per day.
- City-bike with rear child seat: €5/hour, up to a maximum of €20 per day.
- Mountain bike: €5/hour, up to €20 per day.
- E-bike (electric bikes with pedal assistance): €8.00/hour, up to €32.00 per day.
- Electric mountain bikes (with or without rear child seat): €10/hour, up to €40 per day.
The price includes a lock for stops along the route, a helmet (minors must carry a helmet even if they choose not to wear it), and an illustrated map of Appian Way with a detailed route explanation.
We highly recommend mountain bikes (mtb) or electric mountain bikes (e-mtb) due to the Appian Way’s rugged cobblestones and sampietrini paving stones.

We are open every day (except December 25th and January 1st) from 9:30 am. Closing time varies between 5-7 pm, depending on the season.

Can I ride my rental bike around Rome's city center?
We recommend staying within the protected area of the Regional Park of the Via Appia Antica. However, you are free to choose any route.
Can I rent a bike for multiple days?
No. You must return your bike by closing time on the same day at our service center at Via Appia Antica 58-60.
Are the routes of the Appian Way suitable for everyone?
There are two main routes along the Appian Way: the historical-archaeological route along the Via Appia Antica and a nature trail within the Caffarella Valley.
The first, which includes significant events in Rome’s history, is on cobblestones and short stretches of ancient basalt. In these sections, you should either walk your bikes or take the dirt paths on either side to protect both the bike and the ancient paving. For an easy and accessible route, especially for children, we recommend the Caffarella Valley.
Minors must be accompanied by an adult who will need to sign a liability form. Minors must also wear helmets while cycling.
Click here to see the routes.
Do you offer guided tours?
Yes! There are two ways to explore the Appian Way:
- Book a shared e-bike tour or private tour by bike or golf cart. Your expert fluent guide will accompany you on an immersive itinerary through the Appian Way’s highlights of historical and natural interest. Our guided tours range from 2 to 3.5 hours and can be booked as walking tours, bike tours (electric or mountain bike), or electric minicar tours.
- Rent a bike from our Service Center (Via Appia Antica 58-60) and explore the Via Appia yourself. Our staff will provide a free map with the route, indicating opening hours and prices of main sites, refreshment points, and useful tips.
Can I leave my luggage and bags with you?
Sure! We provide free lockers if you want to leave something before you set off, or, in case of larger luggage, you can leave it in our office.
Is the Appian Way closed to traffic?
The Regional Park of the Via Appia Antica comprises a 4580-hectare area with some stretches of traffic. On every day except Wednesdays, when the Catacombs of San Callisto are closed, you can use the private road leading up to the catacombs to avoid traffic on the trafficked stretch of the Via Appia Antica, and reach the traffic-limited area after the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella. The private road is open every day from 10 am to 5.30 pm, amd the route is illustrated below.
Please note: on Wednesdays, when this road is closed, you’ll have to cycle about 1 mile of the trafficked part of the Via Appia Antica or take the much longer route through the Caffarella Valley to reach the traffic-limited area of the Appian Way.
