Begin your tour with a 1-hour guided visit to one of the Appian Way’s catacombs. Descending underground, you’ll be led by a local expert through the tunnels of these catacombs: vast subterranean cemeteries for Rome’s Christian population. The ticket for this catacombs tour is included in the price.

Then travel along the Appian Way, visiting the Circus of Maxentius (the best-preserved chariot-racing track in the Roman Empire) and the Mausoleum of Romulus (a 3rd-century dynastic tomb that transports you back in time), as well as the archaeological area of Capo di Bove — a private bathing complex for the Roman elite.  

After stopping to admire the Tomb of Caecilia Metella, a monument dating from the time of Emperor Augustus, you’ll come upon the road’s original basalt paving stones before continuing down the road to encounter the dozens of ancient tombs still lining either side. Your tour then continues through Rome’s scenic Aqueducts Park, a green lung where you can admire the impressive Roman aqueducts stretching off into the distance.
